Historic Preservation Month Activities
May is Historic Preservation Month in Forsyth County! To help celebrate, the Historic Resources Commission (HRC) has several events planned, which are listed in the enclosed attachment. Please take a look to see if one (or more!) interests you – they’re scheduled throughout the month, and are a variety of topics.
Please pass the flyer along to your family, friends, neighborhood organizations, or anyone you feel would be interested!
This year’s poster is also attached: ‘Landscapes to our past…. keep them open’, it is now available in the Planning Office.
Historic Preservation Month is an exciting time for our community. Its a wonderful time to honor our past, celebrate our present, and to also look forward to our exciting future.
The HRC will be announcing more events and promotions over the next couple of weeks. Be sure to look for them.
If you have any questions or would like one or more posters please contact me at 747-7063!

Historic Preservation Tuesday, 7 PM, 4/14/2009
Whether your passion is gardening, being productive while enjoying nature or political activism through city planning, there is an event for you! Spring is a great time to focus on both our history and historic preservation. The weather is now perfect for those projects we have been considering over the cold winter months. To inspire us, Patty Heath, Tiffany White and Michelle McCullough will present a demonstration on the history of Ardmore, our Architectural styles and the resources available to aid us in preservation. We hope to see you April 14th at 7:00 at the Ardmore United Methodist Church.
An important part of preserving our homes and our neighborhood is promoting houses that are for sale. Ardmore has an advantage in these challenging times. Medical Residents and students are currently looking for housing close to the hospitals. To advertise sales to them, e-mail Diane Hartley at ude.cmbufwnull@yeltrahd. For rental opportunities, e-mail ude.cmbufwnull@kcirtst. This year sixteen houses have sold in Ardmore. We have information that at least one home was sold due to advertisement on Craig’s List.
On May 2 the Ardmore Baptist Church is sponsoring a Peter’s Creek Stream clean up. We have been invited to join them at 9:00 at Link Road for the cleanup and at their church at noon for a block party. It is amazing how pretty the stream area is and how satisfying it is to protect it through clean up. Please come support the Peters Creek Community Initiative through this worth -while event. Please RSVP at gro.tsitpaberomdranull@dnalerib, or call 725-8767.
On May 12th at 7 pm at our regular monthly board meeting, Craig Monty of the North Carolina Extension Agency will present “Low Maintenance Gardening” He will discuss a wide range of information including drought tolerant plantings. We look forward to implementing his ideas. On May 21st at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall at Highland Presbyterian Church there will be a Southwest area plan meeting lead by Marco Andrade. The citizen’s advisory committee has been meeting for several months. Everyone is invited to read the minutes on the ANA website, WWW.Ardmore.WS and bring comments to the meeting. Please go to WWW.Ardmore.WS for information about transportation, police beats, animals and web updates.

Trees
The tree canopy of our homes, parks and privately owned wooded areas add much financial as well as aesthetic and environmental value to our city. The Winston Salem Neighborhood Alliance, the Sierra Club, developers and realtors have been working on an ordinance which would balance the value of the trees with the cost of preservation to owners, developers and realtors. A strong ordinance was agreed upon prior to the change in economic conditions. Then, it was weakened in deference to the concerns of cost for development and adding two planning positions for enforcement. In its current form, the ordinance would prevent the tree topping which weakens trees and decreases the environmental and aesthetic value of the trees . It would also protect ten percent of trees during development in some areas. However, there are loop holes which could allow for clear cutting and replacement of small replanted trees for large trees which provide greater storm water and air pollution protection. Additionally, Council member Dan Besse believes the needed planning positions can be shifted from other city positions. Please read further on this topic at:

Looking for Historical Photos
Ardmore has a unique place in Winston-Salem’s history and has its own unique identity from other neighborhoods in the city. The ANA hopes to capture this character in a publication and is in the early planning stages for this project. We are seeking individuals that have personal or family photographs showing life in Ardmore at any point in the past 100 years. These can be photos of a home, garden, streetscape, landscape or family activities. If you have photographs that you would be willing to share with the ANA for possible publication, please contact sw.eromdranull@eromdra.
Visioning Meeting Results for Southwest Area Plan (SWAP) 10/9/2008
On Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 5:46 PM, Robin Bass
Dear Southwest Area Plan Participants,
The Community Vision Meeting on September 30, 2008 had a good turn out of citizens from the community. This was a good meeting that produced good ideas and goals for your community and what you want your community to look like in the future.
Marco has combined the “SWAP Vision Results” information that was gathered from the four groups and typed it in document form for your review. (See attached word document below). This information will be used in defining the vision (goals) for the different elements of the plan.
We thank all of you for your participation and interest in the Southwest Area Plan process and look forward to working with you during this process.
Sincerely,
Robin Bass
